With the advent of quantum chromodynamics as a complete theory of the strong interactions, one can now anticipate understanding the underlying dynamics and composition of both hadrons and nuclei at a fundamental level. In the last few years considerable progress has been made in calculating short distance hadronic scattering and production amplitudes in terms of quark and gluon subprocesses. l-6 This in turn has led to a basic understanding of exclusive hadron and nuclear scattering processes at large momentum transfer as well as progress in describing the structure of hadronic and nuclear wavefunctions in terms of their fundamental quark and gluon degrees of freedom.7
